In his poem “The Sea,” the poet James Reeves makes an unusual analogy between the sea and a dog that is always hungry. Just as a dog is always discontent, strong, and barking, the sea exhibits various characters too. In rough weather, it becomes untamed, angry, and violent, making loud noises which, to some people, sound like a dog’s growling and howling while breaking against the rocks.

It is constantly ruining the stones on the shore as though they were bones. However, the sea is very different when the weather is nice, and during the gentle days of May or June, it is not only beautiful and quiet but also very much like a tired dog lying with its head resting on its paws. The poet skillfully illustrates the fierce side and calm side of the sea, which is similar to that of a living creature.

a king, proud of his power—tells he can control everything on earth—takes his courtiers to the sea shore—orders the waves to move back—the waves lash at the feet of the king—the king moves back in fear

Once there was a king who was very proud of his power. He often boasted that he could control everything on earth. One day, to prove his strength, he took his courtiers to the sea shore. Standing before the waves, he ordered them to move back. But the mighty sea did not obey him. The waves rushed forward and splashed at his feet. Frightened, the king stepped back and realized that no one can control nature.

Dear Rohan,

I hope you are doing well. I want to advise you to be kind to animals. They cannot speak like us, but they also feel pain, hunger, and love. Always give them food and water whenever you can and never hurt them. Treat every living being with care and respect. Kindness towards animals makes us better humans. I’m sure you will follow this advice.

With love,
Your brother,
Subhendu
