The Girl Who Saved Her Brother from Fire

When a fire started in her Pune home a few years ago because of a short circuit, 11-year-old Aarushi Verma displayed amazing bravery. She and her 5-year-old brother, Kabir, were by themselves, as her parents were not home.

Aarushi remained calm when the fire broke out in the kitchen and spread swiftly. At once she covered her own face with a handkerchief, wrapped her brother in a damp blanket, and escorted him out into the smoke-filled hallway to safety. The neighbors helped call the fire department once she informed them. The fire was contained, and both children were spared because of her courage and quick thinking.

Aarushi’s bravery and presence of mind later earned her a National Bravery Award.
