“The Great Escape” tells the brave story of how Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose escaped from house arrest to continue India’s fight for freedom.
In December 1940, Bose asked his nephew, Sisir, to help him escape from his Elgin Road home in Calcutta. They planned carefully, and with the help of Akbar Shah, arranged a disguise for Bose as Muhammad Ziauddin, an insurance agent.
On the night of 16th January 1941, after everyone had gone to sleep, Bose put on his disguise and quietly left the house with Sisir. They drove out in Sisir’s car, crossing Howrah Bridge and leaving Calcutta behind. After resting for a day at Bararee, near Dhanbad, Bose continued his journey.
That night, Sisir drove him to Gomoh station, where Bose boarded the Delhi–Kalka Mail. Waving goodbye, he walked confidently into the darkness, beginning his daring journey to freedom.
