A parrot who was very smart was living in a golden cage of a wealthy merchant. The parrot talked a lot and was always entertaining the merchant, but it really wanted to be free and fly high in the sky. The merchant before he went away for a long time asked the parrot what present it wanted. The parrot asked for freedom, but the merchant said no. The parrot however, then asked him to at least tell the parrots in the jungle about it.

During the journey, he came across a bunch of parrots and passed on the message. On hearing it, one parrot suddenly fell to the ground as if it was dead. The merchant was taken aback and left with a sorrowful heart. When he went back home and narrated the incident to his own parrot, the parrot fell down non-moving too. The merchant thinking it had died placed it on the windowsill. But the parrot quickly stood up, extended its wings, and soared away. It said that the jungle parrot had taught it the trick to get out. Eventually, it flew joyfully into the clear sky.

सफ़र के दौरान, उसे तोतों का एक झुंड मिला और उसने उन्हें यह बात बता दी। यह सुनकर, एक तोता अचानक ज़मीन पर ऐसे गिर पड़ा जैसे मर गया हो। व्यापारी हैरान रह गया और दुखी मन से चला गया। जब वह घर वापस गया और अपने तोते को यह बात बताई, तो तोता भी बिना हिले-डुले गिर पड़ा। व्यापारी को लगा कि वह मर गया है, इसलिए उसने उसे खिड़की पर रख दिया। लेकिन तोता जल्दी से खड़ा हुआ, अपने पंख फैलाए और उड़ गया। उसने कहा कि जंगल के तोते ने उसे बाहर निकलने का तरीका सिखाया था। आखिरकार, वह खुशी-खुशी साफ़ आसमान में उड़ गया।
