The story is about two young artists, Sue and Johnsy, who live together in Greenwich Village. In winter, Johnsy falls seriously ill with pneumonia. While lying in bed, she becomes convinced that she will die when the last leaf falls from an old vine outside her window. Day by day, as the leaves drop, she loses the will to live.

Sue tries her best to save her friend and asks their neighbor, old Behrman, for help. When a stormy night comes and the last real leaf falls, Behrman secretly goes outside and paints a leaf on the wall that looks exactly like a real one.

In the next day, Johnsy sees that the “last leaf” is still there despite the heavy wind and rain. This gives her new hope and courage to live. She slowly begins to recover.

However, Behrman catches pneumonia that night while painting in the cold rain. He becomes very ill and later dies in the hospital. In the end of the story, Sue tells Johnsy that the leaf was Behrman’s masterpiece, painted to save her life.

  1. It’s inspiring to see such a detailed and student-friendly guide on The Last Leaf by O. Henry. The way the summary, MCQs, short answers, and long answers are structured makes it especially helpful for Class XI students preparing under WBCHSE. I appreciate how the post not only explains the plot but also highlights the emotional depth of Behrman’s sacrifice and the central theme of hope.

What stands out most is how clearly the moral and character roles are explained this really helps students move beyond rote learning and actually understand the story’s message about love, friendship, and selflessness. Resources like this can truly strengthen conceptual clarity and exam confidence at the same time.

    • Thank you so much for your thoughtful and encouraging words. 🌿

Your appreciation truly means a lot. My main goal while preparing the guide on **“The Last Leaf”** was not just to help students prepare for exams, but to help them *feel* the story — to understand the emotional strength behind Behrman’s sacrifice and the powerful message of hope that O. Henry conveys.

I firmly believe that literature should not be limited to memorizing answers. When students understand the characters, themes, and moral values deeply, they naturally gain confidence in writing better answers in the WBCHSE examinations. That is why I structured the summary, MCQs, short answers, and long answers in a way that builds both conceptual clarity and exam readiness.

Your feedback motivates me to continue creating more detailed, student-friendly resources that make learning meaningful and engaging. Thank you once again for taking the time to share your thoughts.
