The Happy Prince Summary Class 8 in English
The tale of “The Happy Prince” is centered around a golden prince statue who was very happy when he was alive. The statue is sitting high over the town and can now be a witness to the sorrow and poverty the prince never experienced while living like a god. He is very sympathetic to the people who suffer, and he wants to ease their pain, but being immobile, he has to find a little swallow to deliver his messages.
The Swallow is willing to spend one night with the Happy Prince, though he is already late for his trip to warm Egypt with the other birds. The prince calls for him to get the ruby from his sword and give it to a poor lady whose baby is sick. The Swallow complies and feels warm and joyous after her assistance. The following night the Prince requests the Swallow to carry one of his emerald eyes to a poor dramatist and then the other to a child without shoes. The Swallow submits, though it causes the Prince to become sightless.
Then the Swallow remains with the Prince, imparting tales of all the afflicted souls in the city. The Prince urges him to strip him of all the gold that is on his body and distribute it among the poor. In no time the Prince loses all his radiance and the Swallow grows feeble and dies at the prince’s feet from freezing.
When later the Mayor and the Councilors see the statue they deem it ugly and unworthy. They command the statue be removed and melted down. Yet the heaven-bound Angel takes the broken heart of the Prince and the corpse of the Swallow and they are both rewarded in heaven for their goodness and love.
